How To Play Piano Chords By Ear

Having been in the music industry for well over 30 years, I have met many “play by ear pianists” who have great talent, however who’s relationship with their piano sadly originated in the wrong fashion. They discarded a golden rule in learning how to play piano chords by ear and as a result had been restricting their own piano playing skill. Overeager to learn to play piano chords they quickly learned the progression of three primary piano chords related to a specific pitched key, normally that of the key of C, and hampered by ignorance with regard to basic fundamentals, they lack ability to proceed beyond that point. Generally not in favor of learning sheet music notation “play by ear” musicians often fall victim to the said practice. Yes, there is indeed a right way and a wrong way of going about learning how to play piano/ chords by ear. A person who is serious in becoming a skillful pianist should strive from the very beginning to learn to play the piano in all twelve different pitched keys, as well as becoming familiar with the progression of at least twelve different piano chords in each pitched key. Yes, it is indeed possible, however, only by commitment and lots of practice, meaning that the student determines his/her own success. Contrary to the pianist capable of playing from sheet music notation, the play by ear pianist, totally dependable on his/her auditive perception, needs to be suitably equipped for the task of playing the piano. It can be compared with driving a motor vehicle. In order to get the engine to start and perform its duties, there needs to be fuel in the tank. Likewise, a piano requires fuel in order to perform at its maximum efficiency. Well…not exactly the same type that one would use to fill up your car’s tank. The fuel I am talking about in this case is better known as: piano chords. Yes, metaphorically spoken, piano chords are the fuel required by the piano in order to fire on all its cylinders. Once the driver has started the vehicle, he steers it into motion and he submits to his senses detecting as to when to switch to which gear and he enjoys a pleasant journey. The same principle applies to playing piano chords by ear. Acquaintance with the basic fundamentals of western music, enables one to start off at the right point and to submit to one’s senses detecting as to when to switch to which chord and lets you enjoy a pleasant music journey. Question: How should one start learning to play piano chords by ear? Answer: Start off by familiarizing yourself with the layout of the piano keyboard.
Tips:
*Set yourself a long-term goal as to what you want to achieve.
*Break up your long-term goal into a specific number of daily goals.
*Endeavor not to deviate from this goal.
Learning the piano keyboard:
*Learn the names and arrangement of the 7 natural notes/keys of the C major scale e.g. ascending:
C-D-E-F-G-A-B and descending: B-A-G-F-E-D-C
*Use masking tape and a marker to label each key with its note name. Once you are familiar with the note names the masking tape can be peeled off without leaving residue.
*Learn the repeating octaves e.g. C-D-E-F-G-A-B-[C] or: E-F-G-A-B-C-D-[E] etc.- ascending and descending.
*Learn the names and the functions of the 5 modifiers (black keys) – sharps/ascending and flats/ descending. Sorry I don’t know how to format the “sharp” and “flat” symbols so that it shows up here.
*Start each practice session by running your fingers over several octaves, ascending and descending, every time covering a full Chromatic scale.
*Practice frequently!

If you are thinking of learning to play the piano, you may well want to start out with an electronic keyboard. They are generally much cheaper than a real acoustic piano and have options like percussion rhythms or instrument sounds. However, if you intend to have piano lessons your piano teacher will probably want you to have an acoustic piano at home to practice on. All the same, an electronic keyboard can give you hours of fun and if you want to progress to an acoustic piano you can do that later, when you think you will be able to play.

Most experts recommend that you buy an electronic keyboard with at least 61 keys so that you can play more traditional music. A good option is a piano keyboard with a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) sometimes known as a USB Keyboard, which can communicate with your computer and other electronic instruments. The USB keyboard is a less expensive option and have no built in sound so can only be used with a computer. It is expert opinion that even the lowest priced piano keyboards perform better than the USB keyboard which loses some sound quality.

How To Play Piano Chords By Ear

Anybody serious about mastering the art of playing the piano by ear, should endeavor from the very start to learn to play the piano in all twelve different pitched keys, using at least twelve different piano chords in each. Provided the correct procedure is followed, anybody keen about learning to play the piano, will become knowledgeable about constructing piano chords in no time and without any assistance. The secret in learning to play piano chords lies in familiarizing oneself with the layout of the piano keyboard firstly.
The piano is designed to deliver twelve different pitched tones, each of which is named after an alphabetical letter. The 88 notes/keys on the keyboard, are arranged from left to right in a set pattern, ascending in pitch and divided into repeating groups/octaves of thirteen notes/tones. Starting ascending from left to right, the first 7 white notes/keys are known as the 7 natural notes i.e. A-B-C-D-E-F-G-[A] and when sounded ascending individually they give the familiar sound of: DO, RE, ME, FA, SO, LA, TI, [DO]. The 5 black keys in between the 7 naturals, are known as: modifiers. Here’s how to identify their names: Ascending:- the black key to the right of the “A” key, is a semi-tone higher in pitch and is known as the A-sharp note. The black key to the right of the “C” key, is a semi-tone higher in pitch and is known as the “C-sharp” note. The same principle applies to D, F and G. Descending: The black key to the left of the “B” key, is a semi-tone lower in pitch and is known as the B-flat note, meaning that this note/key has 2 names i.e. B-flat and/or A-sharp. Which ever of the two names you wish to call it, is right. The black key to the left of the “A” key, is a semi-tone lower in pitch and is known as the “A-flat” note, meaning that this note/key has 2 names i.e. A-flat and/or G-sharp. Which ever of the two names you wish to call it, is right. The same principle applies to G, E and D. Now do the following: sound the A note/key, counting it as 1, and proceed up by semi-tones to the count of twelve. You have played all twelve different pitched tones on the piano, the said of which is known as the: Chromatic scale. Sounding the 13th note, you’ll notice that it is the same note as that which you started with, A that is, yet on a higher pitch. The range of notes/keys spanning from “A” to “A” (13 semi-tones) is known as an: octave. In order to become conversant with piano chords, it is essential to be thoroughly acquainted with the Chromatic scale.
About the Chromatic scale:
It consists of twelve semi-tones e.g. the Chromatic scale of C: Ascending: C, C-sharp, D, D-sharp, E, F, F-sharp, G, G-sharp, A, A-sharp, B, [C]. Descending: [C, B, B-flat, A, A-flat, G, G-flat, F, E, E-flat, D, D-flat, [C]. Each Chromatic scale follows the same pattern.

How To Learn To Play Piano Efficiently And Easily By Mimicking Professional Piano Players

The best way to learn a language is to imitate native speakers. Likewise, the best way to learn the piano is to imitate professional piano players.

When you learn a foreign language, you try to converse with those who speak the language fluently. Hopefully, you’ll pick up the right intonation, phrasing, accent, and pronunciation. The more you imitate, the more fluent you become.

Learning the piano is no different. Music is a language. As such, it has intonation, phrasing, dynamics, etc. But the key to mastering the piano, like mastering a verbal language, is to acquire good habits from the start. This is why it’s important to learn from someone who has already mastered the language of piano. Many beginning piano students fall into the trap of learning by themselves without the proper guidance to master the fundamentals. The following pointers help to get beginning students into the right track to becoming competent piano players.

•    Seek out a good piano teacher who does not hesitate to let you imitate his/her skills. Ask yourself this question “is he/she going to teach me the necessary skills to become a well rounded player or is he/she just going to teach me the same old “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” like many other old school teachers do. If you go with self study, make sure you choose a system that emphasizes the imitation technique.

•    Learn the fundamentals – take your time to learn the basics. When you first learn a foreign language, you don’t try to converse in full sentences right away. You start out with one letter at a time, one syllable at a time. Then you put syllables together to form one word, and then you put words together to form sentences. Before long you’re able to communicate with your fellow students. Likewise, when you start out learning the piano, learn one hand at a time, then hands together; one chord structure at a time, then chord progressions. Simply and joyfully.

•    Choose a method that de-emphasizes note reading and encourages chord style playing and playing by ear. I’m not saying that you should not learn how to read note, but if you want to start playing hundreds of songs, start learning chord style piano. Chords are much easier to learn and master. With only a few chords you can play many pop songs pretty quickly. And if you are so inclined to learn classical piano later on, you can always focus on pure reading then.

•    Have fun or else – just because you are starting out learning the piano, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. This is important if you want to keep playing the piano for years down the road. Many students give up early because they don’t have fun. Unfortunately, traditional methods that teach rote memory and emphasize on sight reading tend to discourage this important element. Thanks to today’s technology and other alternative piano methods that focus on chord style piano playing, students learn to play and have fun from day one. Some online piano methods incorporate audio, video, and computer games to help the beginning students learn better and faster.

The key to learning to play the piano well is not about “suffer first then enjoy later”, but to enjoy it now – from day one! It doesn’t have to take 6 months before you start having fun. Take all the time you need, but enjoy every moment of it now.
